Spanish I is a yearlong course which focuses on proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Due to the nature of the sequential course of study, it is essential that each student in Spanish I cover the required material in order to progress to the next level and experience success. (Prerequisite: None -Average or above performance in Language Arts is strongly suggested.)
Spanish II is a yearlong course providing students with additional experience in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Simultaneously, students will continue to discover similarities and differences between Hispanic cultures and their own. The program is proficiency-oriented with emphasis on student communication which will enable them to functionally survive in the Spanish-speaking world. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish I -Average or above performance in Language Arts is strongly recommended.)
Spanish III is a yearlong course. Students will become increasingly proficient in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. An array of opportunities opens the door to students in the areas of college credit, university cultural fair visits, as well as field trips to view traveling Hispanic performers. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish II)
Students will become increasingly proficient in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This cultural passport will personally unite the student with the Spanish-speaking world, hence allowing students to experience success. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish III)
Spanish V is a yearlong course offered for independent study to the student with a penchant for self-discipline and an extraordinary desire to broaden reading, writing, speaking, and cultural skills. The student will be able to market these skills as Spanish becomes the language that one out of six young adults will speak in the year 2010. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish IV and approval of instructor)
French I is a yearlong course which provides students with their first experience in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French. At the same time, students will enjoy comparing
and contrasting cultures different from their own. The program is proficiency-oriented, meaning that students will truly be able to apply what they learn. This focus on communication will be an exciting journey through the French-speaking world. (Prerequisite: None - Average or above performance in Language Arts is strongly suggested)
French II is a yearlong course which both reinforces and broadens students skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking in French. Students will integrate culture and language in a way that invites curiosity and encourages global awareness. This study focuses on communication and is proficiency-oriented, meaning that students will truly be able to apply what they learn. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of French I)
French III is a yearlong course in which the textbook is supplemented with films, magazines, newspapers, and computer software in order to further skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will receive weighted grades in this course in addition to the opportunity to earn college credit. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of French II)
French IV is a yearlong course where students will investigate preparation for the university and career choices, wherever their language takes them. This course will be conducted almost exclusively in French. Students will receive weighted grades in addition to the opportunity to earn college credit. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of French III)
French V is a yearlong course of independent study which includes exploring literary masterpieces, French culture, customs, history and traditions. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of French IV)
Business French is a semester class to be taken concurrently with French IV. Students will learn the business protocol and practices which define the business community of francophone countries. (Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in French IV or V)
German I is a yearlong course in which students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Using communicative activities students will apply what they have learned in practical, proficiency-oriented situations. Throughout the course, students will have many opportunities to "meet" their German-speaking counterparts by getting to know their culture and interests. (Prerequisite: None - Average or above performance in Language Arts is strongly suggested.)
German II is a yearlong course which allows students to further develop their ability to listen, speak, read, and write in German while enjoying the experience of learning about German culture through topics such as driving, food, entertainment, and the close ties between the United States and Germany. The course is proficiency-oriented, meaning students will truly be able to apply what they learn through partner/group activities and games. The focus on communication will lend excitement and relevance to the student's experience of German and German-speaking countries. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of German I)
German III is a yearlong course in which students acquire greater proficiency and ease in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills by supplementing the text with films, magazines, and computer tutorials. In communicative activities, students will demonstrate the use of higher order thinking skills to convey emotions and opinions, to hypothesize, and to offer compromises and solutions. Students will express themselves through several multi-media projects in the target language and attend a German performance. German III is available for five hours of college credit through the University of Missouri - St. Louis and counts for a weighted grade. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of German II)
In this yearlong course students will increase their proficiency through the active use of listening, speaking, reading, and- writing activities for creative and spontaneous communication. Analysis of the reading will provide a review of concepts and strengthen translation skills. The goal is to use German exclusively in the classroom, as appropriate. German IV is available for 5 hours of college credit through the University of Missouri - St. Louis and counts for a weighted grade. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of German III)
German V is a yearlong course of independent study in which students will have the opportunity to deepen their appreciation for German writers. Students may choose to study The Diary of Anne Frank, or Diewell, Der Richter und Sein Henker, or Kleider Machen Leute. Students will increase their marketable skills by improving their German as they read newspaper articles, interviews, a diary, letters and reports. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of German IV)
Business German is a semester course in which students will learn about the new Germany, the EU - the largest consumer market in the world - and how to organize and write business letters, applications, and resumes, as well as how to set up and prepare for interviews. Get acquainted with the efficient and
rapid German transportation system for your travel adventures, and become familiar with money transactions, environmental problems and protection. Catch a behind-the-scene glimpse of German industry, imports and exports; learn about consumer protection, taxes, social benefits and responsibilities and the integration of foreign workers. (Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in German IV or V)
