Fort Zumwalt South High School, a twenty year old school in St. Charles County, Missouri, has an administration and teaching staff of 120, a student population over 1,620 in grades nine through twelve, with an average daily attendance of ninety-three per cent. The school was opened in September 1987 with ninth and tenth grade students only. In June of 1990, our first graduating class consisted of 300 students. Our 2008 graduates will number approximately 450.
Fort Zumwalt School District lies entirely within St. Charles County, Missouri. The district covers 136 square miles and has a student population of nearly 19,000. Fort Zumwalt School District has fifteen elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools and an alternative high school. The district teaching staff numbers over 1,200.
Students at South High School are residents of St. Peters and O’Fallon, Missouri; suburban middle-class communities. The area and our school’s population, is primarily white middle class. Our minority population, while growing slowly, is still relatively small (less than ten per cent of the total).
While the district consists primarily of a residential community, there are several substantial industrial and commercial areas within its limits. Some of them include Mid-Rivers Mall, St. Peters Centre, plazas anchored by such retail chains as Schnucks, Dierbergs, Kohl’s, Target and Wal-Mart with industrial sites such as MEMC and Arrowhead Park. In addition, the community provides a wide range of educational and athletic facilities. These include the St. Peters Rec-Plex, YMCA, the St. Peters’ Community and Arts Center, St. Charles County Community College and the Boys’ and Girls’ Club.
The majority of students at South High are in a regular college preparatory program with heavy emphasis on classes such as English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. For young people who are in need of alternative educational programs, the district makes several options available. Juniors and seniors interested in vocational/technical educations may choose to enroll at Lewis and Clark Technical School for a half-day program, while continuing to take their core classes at South High. Those students who need a more structured environment than regular school offers, have the following alternatives:
• Night School
• Homebound Classes – for those students unable to be placed in a school setting.
• Summer School – offers both remedial and enrichment opportunities.
• Hope High School – Fort Zumwalt School District’s Alternative High School.
• P.A.S. – Positive Alternative to Suspension.
Fort Zumwalt South also offers many extracurricular activities to its students. A wide variety of sports teams play on varsity, junior varsity and freshmen levels. South High has several service organizations including NHS (National Honor Society), Key Club, PPI (Positive Peer Influence) and Student Council.
