To the Patrons of Rock Creek Elementary School:

On behalf of the Rock Creek Family, we would like to welcome you to our website.  We hope you find the information helpful.  With the dedication of the entire faculty and staff, and the support and efforts of the community, Rock Creek continues to provide “A Solid Foundation in Learning”.

Our school programs focus on providing our students opportunities to grow academically, emotionally and socially.  Our goal is to provide learning experiences and challenges that will prepare them to be productive citizens both in and out of school.  We work to find ways for all students to become active participants in the learning process.  When students get involved in school activities and develop a vested interest in their school community their growth soars.

The Rock Creek Creed states:

*I will care about myself…
and always be responsible and honest
*To others I will…
be respectful, positive and cooperative
*For our world…
I will respect the community I live in, treat others fairly and be a good citizen.

We encourage parents to take an active role in their child’s education.  Research shows that parental involvement is beneficial in reaching academic success.  Please let us know if you would like to join us for lunch, a special event, or to volunteer on a regular basis.  Our PTA offers many opportunities for parental involvement throughout the year and is always open to new members and ideas.  Working together we can continue to make Rock Creek Elementary a wonderful place for our children.

If you have comments or questions, or if we can assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
Deanne McCullough                           Debbie Mueller

A Message from the PTA

Dear Rock Creek Families,

Welcome to Rock Creek Elementary School!

The Rock Creek PTA prides itself on being a powerful voice for children, a relevant resource for parents, and a strong advocate for public education. Membership in PTA is open to anyone who is concerned with the education, health and welfare of our children.

During the 1996 and 1997 school years the PTA was able to raise the necessary funds for the first phase of our playground equipment (valued at approximately $22,000). During the 1998 and 1999 school years our focus altered slightly to include technological advancements in addition to playground equipment. From 2000 through 2003 we directed our support primarily to technology upgrades. In 2004 our students benefited from more reading counts quizzes, additional books for our library, technology upgrades and a poster printer. In 2005 the PTA will continue to support the library and the reading count program. More educational software will be funded and there are preliminary discussions about adding more playground equipment.

One of the goals of the PTA is to get more families involved in this wonderful organization. We always need new people with new ideas that enjoy improving our children’s education and their scholastic experiences!
Please come and join us for our monthly PTA meetings held at 7:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the school library. Everyone is also invited to attend the executive meetings as well. Please contact an officer for times and dates.

Thank you for your interest and support!

Rock Creek PTA

MUSIC

Music is an integral part of all cultures and is an important part of the human experience, as stated in Fort Zumwalt’s Curriculum.  Students will go to music on alternating days with P.E.  In music class, students will be exposed to a variety of musical concepts, styles, and activities.  Throughout the school year, students will actively participate in a number of musical experiences.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES

The Physical Education program is concerned with developing and maintaining health, fitness, physical and social skills, and safety for all students. Alternative activities will be provided to meet the needs of those students with an identified disability.

Elementary Physical Education emphasizes physical fitness skill development, participation and fun.

Safety is a very important part of our classes. We stress that your child wear tennis shoes that are laced with appropriate length strings, tied securely, with good rubber soles and support. Also, children must remove any jewelry, glasses, and obstruction in their pockets that could injure others or themselves.

In order for our classroom at Rock Creek to run smoothly, we have established four basic rules:

1.) Safety First
2.) Show Good Sportsmanship
3.) Do Your Best
4.) Have Fun!!

WELCOME TO THE LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER

Jeannine Mincher
Librarian

Library Clerk

The Rock Creek Elementary Library is a gathering place for reading, learning, and exploring. Our mission is to empower students and educators to become effective users of information and ideas in all formats (print, non-print, electronic, etc.) while fostering the appreciation of literature which leads to life-long learning. The library/media center also supports developing curricula and technology for the entire school.

Students come to the library once each week for scheduled library visits. During this time they learn library and research skills and investigate story elements and book parts. Story time is a regular part of the library visit at all grade levels, and students are introduced to award nominated literature.

We are very proud of our library collection here at Rock Creek. With well over 8000 books our library continues to expand and grow. Our Fiction area is divided by genres and features Mystery/Suspense, Historical Fiction, Adventure, Fantasy, Family and Friendship, School Stories, Animal Stories, Science Fiction, Sports, Humor, and Multicultural categories. The Non-Fiction section of our library contains about 3000 of our titles, and we promote an Everybody Non-Fiction area geared toward our younger readers. Students also have access to a wide variety of magazines, newspapers, and the Internet. Students may visit the library as often as they need between scheduled library visits to check out and renew books.

In an effort to further expand our collection and meet state standards, Rock Creek recently began an Adopt-A-Book program. This is a way for our families to help our library grow by “donating” chosen quality library books to the media center. Our annual Adopt-A-Book is held at the Fall Fun Fair, but books may be adopted at any time during the school year in honor of special people, birthdays, or accomplishments.

Rock Creek Elementary School utilizes the Reading Counts program to enhance student reading achievement. Many books in the library are labeled as Reading Counts books. These books have an orange sticker on the spine and a sticker in the front cover listing lexile, grade level, and points. A list of quizzes accessible in the Rock Creek Computer Lab is available in the library.

Feel free to come by and “check us out”!
