SCHOOL HOURS
Office Hours 8:00 am-4:15
pm
AM Kindergarten 9:15am-12:15pm
PM Kindergarten 12:45pm-3:45pm
First and Second Grade 9:15am-3:45pm
· School opens at 8:50am
for students eating breakfast.
· All other students are encouraged to arrive at school at 9:00am,
and no later than 9:15am. These children should not arrive earlier than 9:00am.
· Bus riders are dismissed after announcements at 3:45pm. Walkers,
bike riders, and car riders are dismissed once buses leave at approximately
3:50pm.

Bus transportation is provided to every child who lives one or more miles from school. All bus changes must be through the Director of Transportation, Mr. Tom Berry, at 240-3138. We will be notified of changes from his office if approved.
Bus routes for the 2008-2009 school year will be mailed to the home of each eligible bus rider in August. Bus changes do not carry over from one school year to the next. Transportation at the start of the school year is set up to and from home. If your child needs to be picked up and returned to a babysitter or daycare, please call the office of the Director of Transportation at (636) 240-3138 so your child may be assigned to the correct bus. Their office is open during the summer, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Due to the large number of bus changes that must be processed, please call as soon as possible. Thank you!
We welcome volunteers! Research has proven the more involved and active parents are in their child's education, the more likely children will reach their full potential. For safety, no matter what the reason for your visit, please stop by the office first to pick up a visitor or volunteer button that must be worn while you are at school.
· If you would like to visit the classroom, please speak
with your child's teacher first. Conferences should also always be scheduled
ahead rather than trying to talk with the teacher when he/she has class. This
will help preserve instruction time.
· You are welcome to come any day for breakfast. There is no need to
call ahead. Breakfast is served from 8:50 - 9:10 am.
· Please call no later than 9:30 am on any day you are coming for lunch.
This allows our cooks enough notice to adequately prepare additional food
as needed. Please feel free to bring in a lunch if desired.
· School volunteers are always appreciated. Teachers often seek and
utilize parent volunteers.
· It is Fort Zumwalt School District's policy to require background
checks on all parent volunteers. If you plan to volunteer during the school
year, please see our office for the necessary forms. Background checks need
to be completed before volunteering. Please be sure to allow enough time to
complete the forms, turn them in, and have the check completed prior to the
dates to volunteer.
Breakfast and lunch are served each school day. If your child will participate on a regular or occasional basis, we ask you to use available meal envelopes (or a blank envelope with your child’s name, teacher’s name, and “lunch money” written on it) to send in cash or checks (made payable to J. L. Mudd Elementary). Every child has a lunch card that is scanned when a meal or drink is purchased. The appropriate amount is then deducted from your child’s account. Every Tuesday and Thursday we notify families when their child's account has a negative balance. A printout of all transactions for your child may be requested at any time.
Free and reduced-price lunch forms are available in the school office. If you feel your family may qualify, please request a form from Mrs. Warlen or Ms. Ellerbrook. Such information is kept strictly confidential. With our computerized system, it is impossible for our students to distinguish between those paying and those on free or reduced-price meals.
SCHOOL PARTIES/CLASSROOM CELEBRATIONS
School parties are held three times a year. Our Fall, Winter, and Valentine parties are one hour in length and provide the students time to enjoy the seasons. During our parties, we welcome volunteers, but remind you that siblings are not allowed to attend.
Our school district requires families to send individually wrapped, store-bought treats. No home baked goods are allowed. We encourage families to send in treats that are as healthy as possible.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES
Mrs. Brandi Guthrie - P.E. Teacher
Mr. Kyle Salvo - P.E. Teacher
The goal of the Physical Education program at J.L. Mudd is to
help children find a variety of ways to enjoy being physically active so that
they will be able to get all of the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social
benefits that come to someone who is physically active throughout his or her
life.
The program will emphasize the following areas:
· Movement Concepts
· Skill Themes
· Wellness Concepts
OLYMPIC DAY
Olympic Day is devoted to games that promote cooperation and fun. We start the day off with a "Parade of Nations", followed by the torch run and Olympic Oath. When this is completed we have a day of games ending with a ceremony presenting a medal to each child. Olympic Day will be held the last day of school.
PRESIDENTIAL FITNESS AWARDS
Students take fitness tests throughout the year. The results of these tests can qualify individuals for any one of a variety of awards.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
We participate in a jump-a-thon each year in February to raise money for the American Heart Association and to raise awareness about healthy bodies and healthy hearts. Look for information to come home around the beginning of February.

Our Library Media Center provides services to J.L. Mudd students and staff
in Kindergarten through Second Grade. Our media staff provides guidance when
students check out books individually or with their class.
Students enjoy puppet shows, storytelling, and studying about authors and types
of literature. A "hands-on" approach, filled with learning activities
connected to books, is enjoyed by each grade level. Curriculum guidelines are
followed by teaching skills designed for each grade level.
Our goal is to provide books for the enjoyment of reading and teach the skills
necessary to use the Media Center. Students enjoy listening to literature, making
book selections and participating in learning activities that connect to books.
There are two Internet stations located in the Media Center that are used for
research. Software is available through the Library Media Center for classroom
use.
Our Library Media Center and PTC will host a book fair in March during the Language
Arts/Book Fair.

Parents are their child's first teacher and they know their child in ways no one else does. Parents often ask how they can prepare their child for kindergarten. Kindergarten teachers recommend that the child entering kindergarten have the following concepts or skills.
Language/Literacy
Math
Social/Self-Help Skills

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Kindergarten Registration for incoming Kindergartners in 2009-2010 will be held in March 2009 at J. L. Mudd Elementary School for those students who will be attending J. L. Mudd in the fall. Parents wishing to register their child this day must bring the following documents: original birth certificate with raised seal issued from state, proof of residency (unpaid gas or electric bill, lease/rental agreement and paid deposit receipt, closing documents from recent purchase of home), registering parent’s photo ID, a complete record of all immunizations, and a copy of custody papers. Kindergartners must turn five on or before July 31, 2009 to begin Kindergarten in August of 2009. If families are unable to attend Kindergarten Registration, appropriate documents may be brought to our office any time after this day, Monday through Friday between 8:00am-4:00pm. If you have any questions regarding any of this information, please contact our office at 636-272-2709.
The St. Charles County YMCA offers a school age child care program at J.
L. Mudd. This program has hours both before and after school, starting at
